10 Things Every Female Should Know

1. You are a prayer in the most holy mouth. The space between clasped hands. A landscape so picturesque at any angle, you are a reminder that magic exists.

2. Oh, they will stop and stare, you most divine creature with unapologetic skin and fearless features. LEARN to take a compliment. Settle into being the center of things. Lees verder

Phenomenal Woman

Zen Pencils is a great cartoonist who turns strong words into even stronger images. I love how he makes poems come to life. Such as Phenomenal Woman by Maya Angelou.

Angelou recently passed away and Gavin of Zen Pencils dedicated this cartoon to her. I think it’s a very strong and gracious poem on the strength of women. With my love for spoken word poetry, I like to read poems out aloud, and this one very good for that. So try it.

First the wonderful cartoon by Zen Pencils, then the full text of the poem (under read more). If you like Maya Angelou, also watch the video by Natalie Patterson with A Tribute To Maya Angelou, al the way down this post.

4 in the morning

What is it with all the mentions of 4 o’clock in the morning in our culture? They seem to be everywhere. At least if you are like performance poet Rives!

Crowdsourcing the 4 A.M. mystery

I’ve loved Rives since his 2006 talk ‘If I controlled the Internet’. Funny, beautiful, and a new sort of poetry. I’ve placed it below. That year after that he came back to share his fascination for the early morning hour in popular culture. Books, movies, TV, poems: 4 A.M. seems to be mentioned all around us. Since that video went online, he has been getting references from all over the world. Now he came back to TED to unravel the mystery and finish the story. The first time I applauded for a TED talk, behind the screen of my computer.

If I controlled the internet

The waterfall

Waterfall in Dharamkot, Dharamshala, Himalayan Pradesh, India

The Waterfall

You send me to see the waterfall today
To wash my hands
And clean the sweat of my back
To invoke stillness on my mind
And clearness in my heart
To conquer my ego
So I could wear it as trophy round my neck

But the mind will not be forced
And the heart is not easily diverged
With caves of stubborn pockets of resistance
as guerrilla emotions fighting from hidden places

If I speak in the tongues[a] of men or of angels, but do not have love,
I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.
If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge,
and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.
If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast,
but do not have love, I gain nothing.

Love is patient, love is kind.
It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.
It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking,
it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.
Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.
It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Love never fails.
But where there are prophecies, they will cease;
where there are tongues, they will be stilled;
where there is knowledge, it will pass away.
For we know in part and we prophesy in part,
but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears.
When I was a child, I talked like a child,
I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child.
When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me.
For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face.
Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.
